1959-1960 677 fixed blade ?

Can anyone tell me why these special design knifes have a curved brass guard with two holes in them ?

I would say that's a big NO.
In 40+ years of collecting and studying Westerns, I have never seen any advertising or writings or other documentation mentioning the presence of the holes or a reason for them.
The best reason I can come up with is that some marketing genius decided it would help sell the knives.
Maybe some 1959 outdoors magazine MAY have an explanation of why the holes are there but I never found such a reference in the magazines I looked though (1948 to 1961) in the University of Texas Perry-Castenada Library extensive collection of magazines.

MARKETING GENIUS ! GREAT ANALYSIS! I was thinking that the holes and curved guard might have been used to attach the knife like a bayonet to a gun I was going have to find and buy ! The wife don’t say to much when she sees a new knife arrives , but guns being more expensive make her raise her eyebrows!
