I’m hoping someone can help me with this. I’m looking at a Camillus that is marked USN on one side & Camillus NY on the other but NO Mark 1. Can someone tell me if this is a MK1 or not please?

Yes. The couple I have had had leather sheaths, although that is a MK 1 sheath it may not be originally for that knife.

I have one with a sheath similar to yours... but I am not sure if it the original sheath, what is the sheath marked on yours?

I’ve been told the knives and sheaths shipped separately and were put together when they were issued.

It makes sense, especially because the nord sheaths were made by a different manufacturer that didn’t make knives

I do not have this yet. Just ordered today and not allowed to have it until my birthday in November. It’s a gift from my family.

Here is a close up of the front of the scabbard from its eBay listing. I hope this helps.

These are pictures of a NOS PAL version. It is wrapped in a couple layers of “paper”. It is not packed with a sheath.

It backs up what I was told that the knives and sheaths were procured separately from the sheaths.

Notice it says nothing about it being made by PAL. Most likely knives from other makers would be treated the same.

That is cool having the paper wrapping with it.

If this is yours-awesome score. An unissued knife is great. And thank you for sharing. It does make sense since you said it.

This is the second layer. It is heavy, saturated with waxy grease? It will stay in any position you flex it to. Really strange stuff.

Under that was another layer of butcher paper.

Then I got to the knife. It is dipped in tar. I haven’t tried to get it off yet.

They really wanted it to stay rust free. Are you going to keep it in the paper, or clean it up? Like the cosmoline (not sure of spelling) they put on guns then packed in barrels.

So far it is still in its tar. Honestly it seems they spent more money/effort to preserve it than it was worth.

C-Man, for comparison, here is my example a Camillus that is marked USN on one side & Camillus NY on the other and marked "Mark 2" as I got it w/this sheath.

Are you going to use a wire wheel to get the tar off, or what would you say was a better method?

I’m thinking maybe diesel fuel or gasoline Maybe if I let it soak it will melt off. It’s strange stuff. Rubbing alcohol doesn’t do anything to it.

I don’t want to damage the gray blade coating.
