All About Pocket Knives

Not a collector...yet..but found a beautiful engraved WR Case & Sons Cutlery Co knife at an estate sale. When I went on line found absolutely nothing.
It is a single blade pocket knife of what might be the "Antique Bone" materials and the entire front surface is profusely engraved. From left to right: Doe & Buck standing underneath trees. Something may be written under bucks body but I cannot decipher. Scene continues with pond and farm buildings. In middle of this part of design is W.R.Case & Sons Cutlery Co. and the Case Logo. I am assuming this is vintage? I've looked on eBay, Etsy, and other internet sites but see nothing to compare with this! Would appreciate any information including name of design (Deer Hunter??), Dating, possible value?

Welcome to AAPK. You’ve made an interesting post. Over the past 50+ years Case has made a business of making “collectable” knives. They have made knives commemorating everything their marketing team can think of. One commemorative series they have done is wildlife. There are knives with etching either on the blade or the handles depicting game animals, game birds, and fish. Although your picture failed to upload here I can guess it’s one from the wildlife series about deer - whitetail, mule deer, bucks, etc. Do a search on eBay for “Case wildlife series” to see some examples. An advanced search there, for sold listings only, of Case wildlife series knives will give you an estimate of what they are worth. You may not see the exact same knife, but the knife you saw will fall into that range of value.

The term “vintage” is ambiguous. Unfortunately many think of it as meaning “old”. When in fact it should have a year included - for example “vintage 1950”, or “vintage 2023”. Case has been making knives since the early 1900s. I can assure you they did not make any commemorative knives with etches prior to the 1980s or thereabouts. Whether or not you view that as being “vintage” is up to you. (If you want to know the age of any Case knife, click on “Research” up there in the header at the top of this page. When it opens scroll down to where it says W.R. Case & Sons Pocket Knife Age Identification” where you will find a tutorial on determining the approximate age.)

There are collectors of every kind and age of knives, and just about anything else for that matter. What is “collectable” is in the eye of the collector. Many collect commemorative knives. If you like it and can afford it, go for it!

Thanks for all the information! Now if I can just figure out how to edit an already posted message & add a picture! My picture showed when I preview my post but did not show in the final post.

To edit your posts click on the little pencil icon in the upper right corner of the post. You can only edit a post for about 48 hours after it is posted. If the pencil icon is no longer present, it's too late. After that only a forum admin can change it.

For posting pictures see my prior post in this thread. If the time for edit has expired don't worry about trying to add it there. Just make a new post with the picture attached.
