Got this one last week at an estate sale. Only issue is the slide lock doesn't like to stay put;making it difficult to carry without it opening in your pocket.
Not a problem as I don't intend to carry it. I will fix it eventually. Stamp is Carl Julius Herbertz.

Picture is a little fuzzy, but it looks like you got a great knife in in great condition. Congratulations Ray!

Yah, a bit fuzzy on my screen too, Ray.
Nice little Herbertz you scored there.
Those old style safeties have always been suspect at best, so for yours to crap-out isn't unusual. The safeties many builders are using these days are far more solid and efficient and are nearly impossible to break, and tiny too, you can barely make them out when viewing the knife.
It also appears that your knife has a replaceable spring, confirmed by the very large pin that's right below the safety. The knife looks like a "Kit" knife from the 80's that were sent without the spring installed, and once you got the knife you'd pop in the spring from the front channel and then insert and push through the large pin to hold it in. That large pin is usually a dual-headed affair with one of the heads being removable, so no peening.
Enjoy your new knife!
