W.J. McElroy Fighting Knife

Greetings! A friend of mine sent me these two pics of a WJ McElroy Confederate fighting knife. I know nothing about these knives other than I saw three identical ones when I googled the name. What say you, does it look authentic? Hope the pic's are OK, they're all he had.

Just found out they are indeed fakes, made in Spain around the 1980's.

Eric, when it comes to confederate bowie knives eleven out of every ten are fakes!

Etched mark and not stamped as you might expect on this type of knife if authentic.

That's what I suspected guys, any knife where the description includes "Civil War" throws up a million red flags for me.

Don't buy any knives purporting to be Confederate or Civil War, your pocket book will thank you.

Over the years I figured out that if all the knives advertised as carried in the civil war were what they were called that by survival rate alone every soldier must have carried two or three !

It is a crying shame anymore...there are so many fakes floating around, especially in the high dollar Bowie knife world...Ebay has tons of it...often does the seller not even know its a fake. This situation makes it so hard for new collectors and people not reading enough about their subject. Somebody just lately "won" a 1870's Sheffield Bowie knife on Ebay...lol...made in India, the almost exact knife was displayed in my local antique store down town...when I left a message for the seller to be aware of the fact that it was a fake...I got a real Nasty phone call from him...claiming I am the idiot not knowing what I was talking about...lol
So let's be aware, read a lot and look a lot at real antique knives to be able to tell the difference....our only guard is education....
