All About Pocket Knives

Michael Mays out of Sheffield was the only one my Google search turned up. Surely there are other knifemakers in the Sheffield area that build high-quality Lambsfoot knives at a moderate price. I am looking to stay in the $100 to $150 range for something in a USA length (3.25" give or take) in the Barlow pattern, ideally in some sort of stainless steel.

The UK-based knife forums I have been on in the past have either been shut down or appear to be a complete mess with mainly political-oriented posts.

Which knifemakers make a really good Lambsfoot knife for someone in Texas (USA)? I am specifically looking for the traditional pattern Lambsfoot that is a bit longer than the UK legal versions but, not a classic Wharncliffe, Sheepsfoot, or Coping blade profile.

I have an A.W. Wright out of Sheffield and it was a total waste of ~$50. Really rough, terrible action, a ton of grit, etc.

Cleaning and working it helped a little but, it is still a nail breaking rough gritty knife. This makes me reluctant to spend any money on another one. Especially after COVID shutdowns, I don't expect QC or quality, in general, to have improved.

Micheal Mays is currently the main contender I am looking at but, I haven't heard back from him.

Kinda like new cars these days. You can beat yourself to death looking at what's in stock, and not find what you want. Or you can order what you want and wait. It will arrive before you know it!

Exactly, the best time to go on Safari was yesterday is the phrase I hear most often in this regard.

With that sort of wait, Michael May has probably won my business since, though he is not a custom knifemaker in the traditional sense, he will make me what I want with the materials I want within reasonable limits.

After looking at what I see on this website's "sale page", prices run the gamut from common UK-ordered "stock" Lamsfoot knives to more expensive customs and collector knives from more famous cutlers.

In the $100 to $150 range, in a working knife, I want to get my choices and not someone else's choices. Michael May initial discussions have me at ~100£ with ~15£ postage for a 9cm knife with a stainless blade (TBD but, likely AEBL) and Rams Horn. Details are still being worked but, that is the general direction of my discussions with him. If I can get 14C28N, an order from him will be a "slam dunk" "two birds one stone" sort of thing!

Yep, I'm considering doing an order out of the UK for one of the wood-scaled models. I'm not sure of the wood but, some Googling suggests it is some sort of African variety.

Any comments on the wood quality, type, or general use in a pocketknife? I could do the plastic fake Stag if that is a better option for a working knife.

I’ve only got the plastic covered Barlow , it’s a solid Knife, mines got some me gaps on one of the bolsters , but I got it second hand for £20 so I’m happy , it strops well
