97223 is a ZIP code in the Portland area. Most, if not all Gerbers of this era were stamped with the zip code for some reason. Your knife is a FSI Folding Sportsman, they were produced from roughly 1975 to '85. The basic Folding Sportsman had a brass frame and rosewood scales, and they were often customized both by Gerber and others. I don't know who might have customized yours.

Your knife appears to be an FS-1 model. It has the earlier blade grind so was made between 1976 and 1983/84. I can't determine what the handle material is from your photos, and the engraving is not a standard feature. My guess is the engraving was done for (or by) an owner.

If I am not mistaken the late Bob Valade did some of the Engraving on Gerber's knives. Bob also did the engraving on a lot of Al Mar knives.
