All About Pocket Knives

I picked up this knife not long ago.
It was so nasty and dirty I had no idea what it was.
I finally cleaned it up enough to find a a name and model #.

It still needs some cleaning, but at least I know what it is.

Anyone know anything on this model?
Are scales bone? Any ideas on what date period it may have been made?

Welcome to AAPK. Catt began manufacturing pocket knives around 1890. Prior to that they operated as jobbers. They did not make pocket knives post-WWII, choosing to focus on kitchen cutlery until they ceased operations in 1963. Unfortunately I know of no way to narrow down the manufacturing date of your knife any more than that. Unlike some cutleries, Cattaraugus didn’t change tang stamps at any particular dates that I’m aware of (can’t see the tang stamp clearly in your pictures anyway). Nice knife, but there’s not a whole lot to say about it beyond what you’ve already said. Maybe someone else will offer some wisdom.

That was a big one, should be 4 1/4". Was called the Regulator. I've seen them with different shields which might be a clue to the age but I'm not knowledgeable enough on the Catts to say for sure.

ETCG: Here's a Catt with that same shield stamped "FARMERS GUIDE". I've had this knife for quite a long time, don't know and can't find a pattern number or style like it in any old Catt catalogs. I've researched "FARMERS GUIDE" but never found a connection. Maybe a magazine that gave out knives for subscribing ??? It's an odd one with a sheepsfoot and a punch, 3-9/16" Age?? Maybe the same as yours? Good luck with it. J.O'.
