All About Pocket Knives

I posted some pics of a Case I bought at a junk shop for $3 with a rotted leather handle. I got the pommel removed but still don’t know how it was done at the factory, it would appear it is cast on but that would belt the handle. Either way I removed the pommel, drilled a piece of deer stag horn out(with a bit of damage at the bottom I had to cover up), made dark red micarta spacers, and a new buckle silver butt end. Used brass and nickel silver pin stock and a stainless tube to make a mosaic pin to hide the damage from drilling. Overall I’m very happy with how it turned out and it made a nice little user.

I didn't know that you were going back without the pommel when I gave you advice on the knife earlier, and I have to say that you overcame the problem and upgraded the knife!

The original plan was going back with it but, I changed directions. The pommel could have been epoxied back on but I decided that the piece of antler I had was shaped so perfectly for it I just moved ahead with out it.

I’m still curious about the attachment of the pommel. The hole in the tang was large (maybe 3/16”) the removal was done by gripping the tang with vice grip pliers while the cheeks of the pommel were on the vice jaws and the pommel had to be heated lightly and the pliers struck with a hammer to shear the “pin”. I wonder if there was a low temp solder poured in a hole on the end ? I tried everything I could to see a seam of the pin, steam, sanding, ink, even magnafluxed it to see if the powder would make an outline. Either way I’m super happy with the outcome.

In the process you learned one of the number one truths about knife repair; if you make a mistake, don't give up ! Work with the mistake and use the mistake to your advantage. You did that quite nicely! Vast improvement over the original handle, IMHO!

Looks comfortable in the hand. Nice work and save of an old beauty!

Thanks for all the kind words. I was thinking about some file work on the butt cap but decided not to press my luck, at least until I get some practice in on a scrap piece. Maybe this week I’ll figure out a sheath.
