All About Pocket Knives

So, I might have to admit that I have a fondness for the good old penknife. I have more than a few other traditional knife patterns, but it's the penknife that has become closest to my heart. From the humble Richards, though the good (and not so good) Wostenholm and on to the outstanding Joseph Elliot & Sons. Even a couple that are "Foreign" and not made in Sheffield!

That's a beauty there FRJ.

One of my favourites is this "Foreign" made knife. As I understand it, the "Foreign" stamp was code for made in Germany when that wasn't the most popular idea on the British market. Not the highest quality knife I own, but more than good enough.

I might have gotten another penknife (and I might have to admit to having a "problem" )

Looking at it in the shop I thought it might be nearly as large as my Elliot knife, but is in fact a bit bigger! Main blade is 3" on the nose. The I.XL at the bottom is a pretty standard size for a penknife, the Elliot is notably bigger and the Rawson edges it out. Time for some cleaning and sharpening once again.

Cheers Jon. Yeah, must say Rawson, but even after a clean the stamp on mine is pretty vague on the first letter.

Nice firm pull and snap on both blades, with no play to mention. Sadly it does have a little tweak on the tip of the main blade.

Looking a bit better after a gentle clean.

One thing (among many) this site is good for is researching knife maker’s names. Use the keyword “search” capability, found under Quicklinks on the upper left. A search for “Rawson” will find numerous posts search.php?keywords=Rawson&terms=all&au ... mit=Search

Whereas a search for “Hawson” finds only your recent post!

It looks like an R that didn't get stamped properly. Whatever the case, it's a fine-looking pen knife!

My latest penknife; a Thomas Turner "Encore". Very nicely made I must say.
