All About Pocket Knives

This month we have a special donation from first-time donor Gordon (Gordon Brandt) who is parting with his Schrade Uncle Henry LB7. Gordon won the July 2022 Forum Member Knife Giveaway and was passionate about returning the favor to another AAPK Member.

The Uncle Henry LB7 Bear Paw is a traditional lockback with a 3.75” high carbon stainless-steel clip blade, wood covers, and brass bolsters, and comes with an unused leather belt sheath. This knife is 5” closed and weighs in at 7.6 ounces.

Gordon doesn’t recall exactly when he acquired the knife but he pocket-carried it for a few weeks and then realized the purpose of the LB7 was for hunting and not pulling his pants down. Since the only hunting that Gordon does is for more pocketknives, the LB7 went on display and his Buck 309 Companion went into his pocket. Good Luck!

You will have until May 31st (6:00 P.M. Eastern) to pick a number, after which entries will not be considered. The Illinois State Lottery evening pick-three drawing will determine the winner on May 31st. The individual closest to the selected number without going over will win. To tell the difference between China & the American made Old Timers & Uncle Henrys, you have to check the tang stamp. If the tang stamp says USA it is an old Schrade. If it does not say USA, the chances are 99.99% that is made in China. Notice I said that is only on the Old Timers & Uncle Henrys. To the best of my knowledge, Taylor has not had any of the Old Timers or Uncle Henrys made in the USA.

The other way to tell is to know the old Schrade patterns. Check for the patterns numbers in the Research Section here at AAPK. I have posted lists of most of the common Schrade patterns of the last 30+ years.

It's the thought that counts, not the value.
I think the fact that the donation is being made by a relatively new member speaks volumes, it would be curious to see a list of all the knives donated from the very beginning and see who's been here a long time and has yet to make a donation.
I have little doubt that the donator's feelings are hurt, mine would be, and hopefully reading these comments won't sour him to our forum, that would be a real shame.
I want to personally apologize, Gordy, please try to not take offence, remember, you're dealing with old men past their prime and who are susceptible to "senior's moments".

I am sorry that some of the members here do not like my donation. I will honor my commitment to Tom (bestgear) , but once the knife has been shipped I will no longer visit AAPK

As the coordinator for this unique monthly contest for the last 5 years I can honestly say this issue has never surfaced. The donors donation is ALWAYS appreciated whether valued at $0.00 or $1,000 and it’s always been about the benevolence and not one-upsmanship nor a competition. I genuinely hope that Gordon reconsiders his reaction and continues to be a contributing member to the forum.

If you feel the same, take a moment to join me in solidarity. Each member is of significant value to AAPK and the pocket knife community as a whole. If we start to value the monthly giveaways as has been done here, I’m joining Gordon and heading for the door.

First I would personally like to apologize to you, because this is not typical of AAPK
As one of the old men and a long time member of AAPK, I know how easy it is to misspeak and say or type something that you regret later.
The knife that was donated is a good serviceable knife and not a piece of junk. Value is in the eye of the beholder. Please don't allow one poorly worded response put you off from AAPK. I have been a member since 2006 when we had a handful of active members and probably only two or three hundred total members. We used to set at our computers waiting for someone to post a comment so we could read it, and respond. Some days we may only have a dozen new posts, and some days probably fewer, but there is a camaraderie among knife collectors that I think you will enjoy. Please don't allow one comment to shape your opinion of AAPK. As a moderator since 2007 or 2008 and then as an administrator since about 2009, I have had a number of negative comments directed at me personally. Those comments were usually made by someone who did not like the rules of the Forum and did not appreciate it when I did my duty and informed them that they were in violation of the form rules and policies. Had I allowed one or two negative comments to cause me to remove myself from this forum, my life would have been far poorer, as I have made dozens of close friends through this forum. These friendships have greatly enriched my life personally and have been instrumental in increasing my love for this Hobby and my knowledge of knives in general. We have people on this forum who are specialists in almost any brand or category of knives you can imagine.

I hope you will reconsider and give AAPK another chance.

I want to thank everybody her for there kind words, I did not mean to donate a knife because I wanted to be cheap I am a newbie a this knife stuff and I did not realize that it was made in China.

I have always known that Gordon, benevolence does not mean lavish expenditure of money. The biggest spendthrift may be a mean man at heart.
