I was still a child during the Korean War but I am proud to honor and say thank you to all of your countrymen, ours and all the others from around the world that served during that time.

Korean war broke out and I started 1st grade a couple of months later. Didn't know anything about it until after it was over.

June 25, 1950 – July 27, 1953

When I was in the second grade Holy Cross Parish school in South Baltimore the nuns would have us write letters to the GI's in Korea. We had an illustration on the classroom wall of a soldier who lay wounded and dying next to his machine gun and the image of Jesus was hovering near him. I would stare at that picture for a long time and think about the soldiers who might read our letters, wondering if they would die. One of the soldiers sent us a beautiful silk scarf with one of those Asian landscapes and we hung it on the wall next to the other picture. That was 1952 and those powerful memories are as fresh as yesterday. Most of those Korean War vets are gone now and sadly, their war is hardly taught or remembered, although it was one of our nastiest for those who were there. J.O'.
