All About Pocket Knives

Hi everyone. This is my first time posting on this site. My name is Chris. I live in Tennessee. I'm a Marine Corp veteran and now I'm a nurse. I've been a huge fan of knives and collected them ever since I got my 506 when I was 6 years old. My grandpa gave it to me and I've never had a gift that I was more excited about. It's the most important one in my collection. I have some really nice knives and if it came down to it, it would be the only one I had and I'd be living under a bridge with it. I have had many adventures with it and it was showing it's age. It had the 440c blade with the nice old English looking buck logo and has the white micarta handle scales. I've sent several of my Buck knives in for service and they have always done excellent work. I sent it to them late last year to have the back spring adjusted as it was bent and to have the spa treatment. I got it back with a brand new blade installed and my handle scales have been polished so thin that you can see through them and the pins stick up enough to catch on things. They did send the old blade back with it thank goodness. I contacted them and they only have rosewood scales available. Do any of you know of someone I can send my knife to so I can have the original blade back on my knife and white micarta scales installed? I can't even look at it the way that it is right now and I would do just about anything to try and get it back to something like my old knife. I wish that I would have just kept it with the damage. It really doesn't look or feel like my knife anymore. It's my first pocket knife and my grandpa has been gone for a long time now. If any of you know someone, I don't care how much it cost but I'll spend it. I just desperately want my 506 back. Please help. Thanks.

There are several knife mechanics here who could help. Be advised that they often have large backlogs, so it could take quite some time. Glennbad, Jeffinn, Reverand, Muskrat Man, Orvet, and Herbva are a few names that come readily to mind. Send one of them a PM saying what you want done, and go from there.

Dan’s advice is good. You need to decide on someone (or a couple of someone’s) you want to work on it, and send them a PM. Click on their user name, which will take you to their member page where you can find links to send them either a PM or email. As Dan says they typically have a backlog of work and don’t need to chase after business. If you’re waiting around for someone to contact you, it will probably be a loooooong wait.

To find someone go to the Knife Repair subforum here viewforum.php?f=37. There you’ll find the folks who work on knives. Find someone whose work you like, contact them and tell them what you want. Send pictures of the knife. Most likely if they’re interested they’ll want you to send the knife to them before they can give more than a ballpark estimate.

One last thing - good quality work by a skilled cutler isn’t cheap. If you’re expecting someone to provide materials and labor to fix your knife for $10-$20, don’t waste your time or theirs.

If you cant find anybody helping ya, give me a ping...I aint no knife mechanic, or custom guru but I work as a hobby on Buck knives...never took a 506 apart but makes no difference...I do have some Westinghouse vintage White paper Micarta laying around...So, if ya absolutely cant find help...I am willing to step in...where about ya at in TN??

That white paper Micarta would look really nice. Goid luck with whatever you decide to do.

Leroy Remer worked at Buck for about 17 years and he does customizations now. I'm not sure how long his wait time is or what he charges. Just another option to consider.

I just noticed that this thread is several weeks old and the OP's last activity on the forum was May 28th. I hope he found someone from the advice already given.

I agree. I also hope he posts pictures after.
