Wharncliffe blades

I like this blade and have several pocket knives with this blade. I am having some knives made and may want a wharncliffe blade on it, its a straight knife, not a folder. modeled after a Schatt & Morgan folding hunter. just what is the practical use for a fixed blade of this type. Other than say, a kitchen knife.

The uses are many and varied. The thicker blade and flat edge mean that blade is extremely sturdy, very well suited for rough carving and cutting. The main use is with the entire edge flat against a cutting surface. I understand mariners often find this useful.
I personally found the point needed less of a steep hand angle to cut down into something, compared to a typical drop-point, and very good for precise cuts.
"From a utilitarian perspective, the biggest advantage of a Wharncliffe blade is that it cuts with full power all the way to the point.
No matter where the cutting edge makes contact, it transfers its energy directly into the material being cut and consistently increases that pressure as the cut goes deeper. Even if you’re cutting with the extreme tip of the cutting edge, a Wharncliffe’s straight profile ensures that you’ll do it with maximum power and leverage. That’s why razor knives, box cutters and similar utility cutting tools are typically Wharncliffe patterns.
In contrast, swept edges actually curve away from the material, paralleling the arc of motion of the hand and purposely limiting the depth of the cut. This is best for skinning knives used for chores where cutting too deeply could nick an animal’s intestines or cut through the hide.
The Wharncliffe’s acute point also makes it a great tool for detailed work and, interestingly, enables it to penetrate with less resistance than most other blade styles. Although the tip is admittedly not as strong as some other profiles, it does its job exceptionally well"

And don't forget...a Wharncliffe blade has an aesthetically pleasing profile, i.e., it just looks cool

I too like the Wharncliffe. I sometimes buy knives that have broken blades just so I can make a replacement blade from 1095 bar stock in the Wharncliffe style.
Keen Kutter jack made into a beer knife with opener and replacement Wharncliffe.
Kutmaster stockman that had the clip broken off replaced with Wharncliffe.

appreciate the feedback. pretty sure I'm gonna do it. Not sure of the grind, for 1 thing. I kinda like false edges too.

those are not true wharncliff blades, more like sheepsfoot blades. Wharncliff blades taper down on the top way earlier than those pictured.

I think a lot of blades are called "Wharncliffe" that are not necessarily a "true" Wharncliffe blade because their profile is closer to a Wharncliffe than any other specifically named blade shape (such as a Sheepsfoot or Lambfoot). In fact, given the great diversity of so-called "Wharncliffe" blade shapes found on knives nowadays, I wonder if every Wharncliffe-like blade that deviates from the original "true" Wharncliffe specs (whatever those are exactly), however slight the variation may be, should be called a "modified Wharncliffe"?
Here are a few examples from my own collection of blades that are all called "Wharncliffes" by the makers or manufacturers. Are any (or none) of these considered a "true" Wharncliffe? And does it really matter if they're ALL called "Wharncliffes" as long as they're generally close to the basic Wharncliffe shape and not close enough to any other named blade type?

Mahalo Ivoryman...as you well know, I do love my Wharnies (whether they're "true" or not makes no difference to me!

Here are some "wharncliffe-like" blades that I made out of something else. The ebony handled one on the left is an old Wilbert, that was a hawkbill at one time. There wasn't much left of the bill part, but there was just enough left to turn the blade into a wharnie wannabe. The two on the right were electricians at one time, back when we were having an informal electrician modification contest. The screwdriver blades were easy to modify into something like wharnies.

I think a fixed blade of this type would work well skinning and striping electrical wire to make up a head to attach rope for pulling .

You totally crack me up, John; for the last 5 or 6 years I've been called "the Mini Trapper King" by certain well-known AAPK members, apparently due to my obsession with Mini-Ts. Now I'm King of the Wharncliffe, too? I'm honored, but I really can't accept that royal title...it's way too much responsibility for the Wharncliffe Monkey (also residing on my back) who keeps trying to bankrupt me with his Wharnie obsession.

So, I'm afraid I'll have to abdicate the Wharncliffe throne to some other worthy Wharncliffe junkie. Before I do, however, I will share this group shot of some of the other loyal subjects in my little Wharncliffe Kingdom

(Thanks robpa for opening up the can of Wharnie worms that gave me an excuse to dig through my catacombs and pull these Wharnies out for a breath of fresh air. A few of them have been entombed in hermetically-sealed, King Tut-style sarcophagi and haven't seen the light of day for several years

)
Oops, it seems there are too many for one group photo, so I'll have to split it into two
(Did I mention that Wharncliffe Monkey is trying to bankrupt me?)
Still searching for the elusive "true" Wharncliffe blade; the quest continues!

Thank you. I don't have any fixed blade Wharncliffe knives. The only one I used to own was a CRKT "Dragon" but I sold it. (I'm not much of a fixed blade guy.)
FWIW, my two main EDC knives are both Wharnies: Spyderco Kiwi 4 with G-10 and Kershaw 1500 Mini Task with Micarta, and they are more than sufficient to handle all my EDC cutting needs.

Mahalo Floyd. I'm afraid "infection" might be too benign a term to describe my Wharncliffe affliction; seems more like a highly-aggressive malignant cancer that continues to spread unabated. Wharncliffe Monkey may very well be attempting to kill me---but the joke's on him because, frankly, I can't think of any way I'd rather die than death by Wharncliffe overload!
Although the news of my "impending death" has been greatly exaggerated, it hasn't stopped the flow of distant Wharncliffe cousins from coming out of the woodwork for my funeral (hoping to get a piece of the inheritance, no doubt!

)
