All About Pocket Knives

This is not mine. I ran across this one on the Bay & I just thought I'd post it for posterity's sake.

Race Knife, also known as a Timber Scribe or Wood Scribe.

Maker: Raucherkopf Solingen (somewhere around 1900)

Used for marking trees and lumber.

Hello Tom. I just have these 2 ordinary ones. And, you can see from the pictures, that they have been "customized" with previous owners' markings. The one you posted is very cool. I don't think I've ever seen one with that extra piece of hardware. Maybe a belt loop? I know you said its not yours, but does it belong to someone you know?

I did some online research about this "Baumreißer" as they are called in German and the extra piece of hardware as you called it is like a safety feature and is meant to be used as a "gaurd" to keep you from slipping & busting up your knuckles on a tree as you walk through the forest quickly marking trees to be cut down. That's what I came up with.

Sorry, missed your last question. No, I don't know the owner of this one. I just ran across it by chance on the Bay. Asking price is €50.

I just posted it because it looked so unusual to me. It grabbed my attention.

Interesting, I've never seen one with a D guard.

Here is another unusual one: a 2 blade model. The fixed blade can be used to scribe small circles such as the curved elements of letters & the folding blade for other chores.

Knice group.

I would have guessed the blades with the hooks are for horse hooves cleaning knife.

Cool 6 pack of scribes. I really like the one with the blade.
