All About Pocket Knives

I'm guessing this is correct but I do have some questions. The unofficial ones I can see in my reference books have a different shield, and I'm not finding the arched WR Case arched stamp listed. The reference material I have doesn't show much this early. Do any of you have ones marked like this? I did find one exactly like this on line but was missing the bail.____Dave

IMO the knife doesn’t look right to me , I noticed this the other day when you first posted it .
The frame and all the blades minus the master blade all look like 1930s Utica scout .
That master blade stamp should be pre 1920 .
The punch blade stamp looks cold struck .
Here is the same knife by Utica just a different master blade .

The frame looks the same as the Utica, but all 4 blades are different, longer punch, totally different bottle opener, and the can opener has a little different profile. The bolsters looked totally untouched on this knife. Sargent's book has this knife marked Case Tested, but don't have any shields like this. only Utica has this one that I can find. My reference books show a Utica with this same frame but different blades and only say Scouts on the shield. The closest one I can find to this knife is in Price's book, and the Scout shield in different. The shield on this knife is pinned on so it isn't an add on. This one is giving me a headache. I did find one just like this but missing the bail on line, so if someone is making these out of parts, they've been busy.____Dave

Very interesting knife. Definitely looks like a Utica frame. The master blade looks good to me but not sure about the punch blade stamp.

I have a WR Case 6445 with a closed C shield, LP master and early fullered punch that has a short nail pull. The 6445 pattern number is stamped on the punch blade. The cap lifter and opener blades are also stamped like the master with a straight 3 line W.R. CASE & Sons Bradford PA, stamp. Also have a Case Tested 6445 with the CASE SCOUT shield with short pull master and the later, normal type punch like the OP knife. Only the master is stamped on the tested knife. Both knives have the same short caplifter and can opener blades. The WR knife has early brown Rogers bone and the Tested has Green bone, neither of which match the OP knife. The frame of the WR knife is noticeably smaller than the Tested knife.

I would like to see the caplifter and can opener blades in your OP knife. I would think that if the OP knife is legitimate that it woud be a contract made by Utica. Would be interesting to know when Utica started production of this Boy Scouts shield pattern.

I believe the knife is ok. I have seen a few others through the years. A few things to consider is that WR Case & Sons never had the right to use the TESTED XX trademark until 1915. The round TESTED XX stamp is indicative of a Contract Knife as well. So the knife was made after 1915 and was made on contract. Nearly all of the W R Case & Sons stamped Knives with the TESTED XX, or sometimes stamped Made in USA were produced on contract.

I've been all over the place on this knife. I began to think Utica made for Case but they were supposed to be only plastic scales according to Pfeiffer's book. The liners are thinner than the books claim Case's to be. Then I see what appears to be this exact frame in other books with the lined bolsters on the Tested and the bail on old Case knives and I just don't know. If it showed any signs of being apart, that would be a big red flag. I did see several more examples of this exact knife on line this morning. The scales on this knife are really nice deep brown bone, almost hinting to green on both sides of the front. Thanks for the interest.____Dave

It's a contract knife by UTICA. They made several knifes for CASE. A friend of mine has a Case Tested XX steel stamp (bunt) that came from the UTICA factory.

This was just weird. I'm sitting reading this thread and a knife almost identical passes across the screen for sale. It's a Empire and the only difference is that the punch in shorter and the bolsters aren't lined. It even had the same lettering on the shield. It looked like the Case XX. I'm pretty sure my knife was made by Utica for Case. I have a Western States and a Boker that likely were also made by Utica. Oddly enough I have a AW Wadsworth that is almost identical but has the shield stamped "Scout Knife" upside down. This has been a trip.____Dave

Maybe Steve would know if Utica made these under contract for Case?

For reference, here are pictures of a W. R. Case & Sons 6445R Scout Knife. This knife could also be a contract knife for all I know, however it does have more of the "traditional" W. R. Case & Sons look and feel to it.
