All About Pocket Knives

Hello, The Harrison punch Patented June 10, 1902 No. 701,878. Could I get some help on who made knives with this punch and from when to when.

Harrison assigned the patent to New York Knife Co. New York made many knives, including several contract knives with that punch, and with a later improvement by J.E.Fuller. The Fuller punch, patented in 1916 has a spiral groove pattern on the back, but otherwise is constructed like the Harrison, with the laminated tang.
I think the Fuller improvement was timed to head off the competitors, because the Harrison punch's patent would expire after 17 years!!
My opinion only.

Charlie thanks for the information, from what you have said I take it that a knife with this punch was made between 1902 and 1916, unless they used existing punch blades and was made by NYKC. Is my assumption possible?

Real possible, stock. They didn't waste anything in those days, so I'm sure the old ones lingered for a while, a couple or a few years at the most, IMO. But we'll never know for sure.

A friend of mine who's grandfather worked for Walden knife just dropped this off with some other stuff he found in Grandpas cabinet that he was cleaning out, he decided to give it to me instead of throwing it out since it was junk. some marked Keen Kutter some not marked assorted sizes. I didn't take pics of the other er junk but thought this shot fit in well with the thread. Some of the other stuff is really amazing. It has been sitting there since he passed away 60 years ago. My friend told me he had to get the rest of the place cleaned up . Being a gentleman I said I was pretty busy but since he was a friend I would make time to help him if he needed a hand. I even poured him a couple of Crowns to ease his wearyness from having to clean up that junk on his own. Amazing aint it. LT

Hello Stockman, You sure ask some good questions. I wish the answers were in are knife books don't you . I have an OVB with a harrison punch and a 4-line cammilus harness jack with the harrison punch, so my assumption is that new york knife company made knives for cammilus--What DOES EVERYONE ELSE THINK????----Thx Mark

LT, that is an interesting punch of piles. . .errr . . pile of piles; ummm you know what I mean. It would be nice to Coon-finger and Chicken-eye those for a while!!

Sound asleep lol, The camillus harness jack is out of town right now, but as soon as I get it back here I will post some pics of it--It is very interesting that it has a harrison punch--The only other harness jack I have is that miller bros. That kinda stinks that I only have 2 right!! I would love nothing more than to build a collection of them as you have upnorth--Plse keep me in mind if you come about duplicates, And I will do the same--Thx Mark

NYK made a lot of knives for OVB (Hibbard, Spencer and Bartlett).
You see the Harrison punches on OVBs quite regularly.
I'm not aware of Harrison punches on Camillus knives though. I'll have to dig around to see if I have an example.
You do see a lot of punches that look like retro-fits. A couple of good pics would help!

I might be confused here upnorth about the harrison punch blade---I thought it was a 2 piece punch blade whether it had a patent# or not?? I would like confirmation as to a 2 piece punch not marked?? Thx 4 your time upnorth---Thx Mark

Harrison's original 1902 punch design drawings do not appear to have included a laminated tang (two-piece). But the examples I've seen all have that feature. It makes me think that the punch was changed when they started production, because it was easier to forge a big curve in thinner steel. I have seen them marked with the patent number, or the date of patent. I don't recall seeing one with no marks, but there could be some.
J.E.Fuller took the laminated tang design, and added a "spiral" pattern on the back of the punch blade, and got a patent for that in 1916.
Both punches were made at New York Knife Co, to my knowledge.
Schatt & Morgan also patented a laminated tang Punch!! Different than the Harrison and Fuller versions, but a similar idea.

Nice group of knives Mark. The OVB is just like an NYK, which is typical.
What make is the one with the "gimp" shield? Is it an HJ? second last in the bottom pic.
