All About Pocket Knives

Hi Guys,

I will have a ton of questions no doubt, as I am on the journey of knife making.

I can't seem to gett the grinds right at the moment, not sure if it's the tension on the sanding belt ??

Anyway I will post more pictures as I go but I have just put the first coat of oil on these oak scales.

I have found the handle process alot easier than the blade making (Cut from an old Cirular saw blade as I want to learn the tooling process before I invest in bar stock or forge something)

I made a few rookie mistakes with the pin positions but it's all a learning curve right ??

Anyway without futher ado here are some pictures so far.

Congratulations both on a very nice job, and correctly identifying the wood you attached as “scales”.

Far too many of us confuse scales (which are the part next to the blade and most often seen on fixed blade knives), with covers (which are typically attached to the scales, aka liners, on folding knives.

Most here don’t care though since we usually know what was intended anyway. Incoming!

Beautiful job on that knife J.T.! Nice and smooth, no sharp edges, can't get much better than that. Pin placement is a learned skill, at first you don't visualize the rounded handle shape and how it affects their location.

Ladies, Gentlemen and those who Identify as a Shoe lace,

Here are the finished results of my first I made something out of nothing knife.

I'm kinda happy with it, there are lots of little bits that this process has taught me to avoid in the future but for a first attempt I'm pretty stoked.

Don't be shy in pointing out issues,as this guidance will be more valuable to me than just saying good first attempt. In fact I will welcome criticism as this is the only way I can speed up my learning curve.

So here we go I have taken a lot of photos so bear with me

Oh yeah so you all know this cost zero but time
Made from an old circular saw blade and a piece of old oak door stop

Forgot to say also was the pin stock (Nickel Silver) bu that cost about a Buck max

Below is the Mum and Dad of this knife

I'm impressed, looks like a top notch job to me. Congrats I look forward to seeing what you do in the future...

I'd love to offer you some constructive criticism Jon, but I can't find anything wrong with the knife. As it sits, if I saw your knife in a retail store I'd buy it no questions asked, and the fact you built it from old scraps makes it that much sweeter. You definitely have a career in knife making ahead of you, sir!

Based off photos, there's nothing to constructively criticize. Looks dang good to me!

Looks great, excellent oak grain and nice shaping of the handle. Did well, will be interested in seeing the next one too.
