All About Pocket Knives

If you were to recommend one knife book for the novice collector what would it be and why? s-k

well, i mostly collect case knives and a friend of mine suggested pocket knife traders price guide by jim parker, so i got one about a year ago and i have to say that i really like it. ive found it to be very complete when it comes to the case knives. ive almost worn mine out...lol. i have also heard that sargents is good, but i havent tried it.

anyway, thats the one i use, but i would really like to hear anyone elses opinion on what would be another good reference for case knives or others as well. hope we both get some answers here...lol.

If I had to pick one for a novice I would say American Premium Guide to Knives + Razors Identification and Value Guide by Jim Sargent. Has a lot of Case, Remington, , and Queen knives. It has a lot of pictures, some even in color, describes all the different types of blades and handles and is packed full of good info.

Out of all for someone starting out: My choice would be "Antique Knives 2nd Edition" by Bruce Voyles.

It has old catalog pictures and illustrations of the major brands and some of the smaller cutlery firms also. Tons of knife info and history. It has an alphabetical list of cutlery manufacturers/companies from 1800-1970, Kinda like Goin's book on cutlery markings. He even gives Thanks to Goins, Levine, Parker, Sargent, and others for helping do this knife book. About 475 pages of old pocket knife stuff.

The downside is; Everything is in black and white.

Obviously depends on your real focus, but I have to agree with some of books posted here. A subscription to KW would be even better for the beginner I think. By the way, that is a right fine looking library that any knife knut would be proud to have. NICE

I second the Voyles book. I have one of them. Can't recall which edition, but it's real good. Also, I agree that the Sargeant book is great.

Every collecter novice or not should have a copy of "Counterfeiting Antique Cutlery" by Gerald Witcher. Also don't forget "Goins' Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings" by John Goins. You can get 'em from Knife World.

I have ordered Goins Encyclopedia from Knife World and the Sheffield Knife Book. Knife World seems to highly recommend Blade's Guide. Anyone have an opinion on that one? s-k
