All About Pocket Knives

Hello,
I just found this forum and joined because I am wanting a mammoth handled knife and I want to learn more about them because I don't want to buy a fake on the internet. I have been fighting blood cancer for the last year and a half and want a mammoth ivory handled knife as a prize for myself. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to AAPK. Sorry to here about your health issue. Is there any particular type of knife you are looking for? Folder or fixed blade? Size? Good luck with your search.

I like Case pocket knives. My favorites are the Doctors knife, Trappers and stockman. I also like the Tribal lock. I have several of those. On straight knives I like small drop point designs like the Loveless design or similar knives.

I have read that you can get your own knives re handled in mammoth but I don't know where you can do this or how you know for sure you are getting the real thing.

Larry, several members here can do that for you. They stay very busy. It can take a few months to get it back.
Message these members. Orvet and Jeffin. Good place to start. Both do exceptional work. If they are too busy to take it on, they can recommend someone good. Hope that helps. By the way there are different grades of mammoth so it would be good to do a little homework first.

Welcome to AAPK. Sorry to learn of your health problem. There are many good doctors working in that field of medicine and many treatments that can make progress, but I’m sure you know that.

You may find a knife to your liking here in the member stores. There is a search capability on the stores homepage into which you can type “mammoth” to help find knives having mammoth ivory covers. You might also try looking at posts in the Knife Repair and Restoration forum here (click on Forum in the great header at the top of this page, then scroll down to find that forum). When you’ve reached it, type Mammoth into the search box (where it says “Search this topic”) and click on the little magnifying glass icon (to the right of the box), which will bring up posts in that forum referring to mammoth. Fighting cancer is tough. Keeping hydrated and nutrition to help your body withstand the treatments helps. I am a survivor, God bless you.

Welcome, Larry.

BIGHEAD (aka Barry Hall) has done several knife mods for me with Mammoth Ivory. He does good work (as do all the knife mechanics on AAPK) and has some very nice mammoth ivory to choose from. His prices are reasonable and the turnaround time is pretty quick.

Larry, welcome to the forum! There are several mammoth handled knives available
at the AAPK store. The store members here are honest and will answer your
questions. It may give you some ideas also on what your future gift would look like.

Thanks. I will let you know what I get. I have been trying to send some private messages to members but I am not sure they are going through. I have not heard back from anyone yet and the messages do not show up in my sent folder.

Private messages (PM) stay in your "out box" until they have been opened and read by the recipient. After that, they go into your "sent messages" folder.

Just gotta be patient, many of these guys are very busy and don't necessarily check their PMs right away.

I must be doing something wrong. I have tried to send BIGHEAD two messages and they do not appear in my outbox or sent folder. I wanted to ask him a question about a knife I found that he put Mammoth handles on.
