All About Pocket Knives

One of my co-workers knows I am a knife-nut, and do "things" to knives. He asked if I could make something for himself and his grown son. It was an easy choice for me, he was an electrician back in the day, so a TL-29 pattern was obvious.

My co-worker is an avid cyclist, skier, hiker, and outdoorsman, so I picked some stag for his covers. The son is a bit more modern, so I went synthetic. Not totally new school mind you, I had a some old butterscotch micarta, so used that. I finished each off with a bar shield.

The blades are both etched Xcelite, which is a tool line I see most often in the electronics world, primarily in labs and component assembly houses. He thought they looked cool, so we left them on.

Great work as always Glenn!! The butterscotch micarta is very cool, but your work with stag is awesome!! I hope they really appreciate these knives.

That bar shield inlay really sets it off, great work on both.

The stag master strikes again!!

Aww, you guys are too kind, thanks! I was talking to my coworker this morning. He showed the knives to his wife, who rides and shows horses, I believe.

She wants me to make something for a horse-trainer friend of hers. I'm not ready to tackle a horsemans knife yet, LOL, but I have made a harness jack type of TL-29 mod before, so I think I'll go down that road. And to my delight, she thinks the covers should be stag!

Well, plans change. They ended up giving the first stag knife to the horse trainer friend, so I just made another stag TL-29 mod for the replacement knife. I usually prefer a little more color in my stag, but this one looks pretty good in natural...

That's a real beauty!

I agree with you about liking color on your stag handles, but you're absolutely right that this one looks good without any additional color.
I usually don't decide to daddy color to stag until I have it on the knife, unless I have a preconceived plan. I like leaving the stag uncolored until I have it nearly finished, because some stag just looks better natural, while other pieces look much better with color.
Great call not to color the Stag on this knife.
This is the case of a little less, is a lot more!

All three of 'em look great! I must admit I really, really like the butterscotch Micarta. If you have any more of it laying around, I might have to send you a knife to put it on...
