New Wood Knife Storage Box Idea

I keep most of my knives in the leather folding cases with the red felt and stretch bands. Last week I found this machinist tool box at Harbor Freight for less than a hundred bucks. It’s hardwood and the drawers are lined infelt. It also locks. It works very nice for collector knives. I am using it for my “most frequently handled” knives. Compared to similar wood boxes, I think this is a bargain.

I'm curious about their quality. Some people say they are junk, yet others say they are good; but not as good as the Gerstner they're modeled on. Thinking about picking one up from HFT to keep on the dresser.

I believe they are just fine for storing knives. I can’t see the need for an expensive box. These have a decent finish and hardware. Especially for the price.

The quality is pretty good. I've been using mine about 8 years, no issues.

I've been trying to order one of those for a year now, but I can't find anyone who ships to Canada. The moment I saw them I knew they'd be perfect for storing my knives. Hopefully the start selling them up here eventually.

I too was using the black/red felt/elastic pouches, but the accumulation of dust just became too much so I've switched over to clear plastic containers. The 5 in the picture hold my 52 autos, and I have 10 more on the way for the rest of my knives. At least they're clear so I can still see my knives.

Can't you go to HF website and order one?

I tried David, but at that time they wouldn't ship it to Canada, perhaps I should try again. Thanks for the suggestion!

EDIT: I just tried ordering from H/F again, but they still don't ship to me.

I made my box, not very fancy. No way you could build one for a hundred bucks. Nice box well worth the money. Harold

I’ve used a machinist tool chest as storage for years, but mine is an old one obtained years ago before they got expensive. Yours should be great storage assuming they haven’t used some kind of materials, dyes or finishes that outgas and harm the knives like some knife rolls do.

Great minds think alike. I bought one of those H/F boxes a year or so ago and am very happy with it. I wouldn’t use it as a tool chest, but for knife storage it’s dandy!

I, too, have one of those to store knives in. Works good for me.
I don't think it would hold up well if used as an actual machinist box ....

Heck I'll pick you one up and mail it to you for what it costs + actual shipping. PM me an address and phone number. It just take a few days but it'll happen

Wow, that's incredibly generous of you bud!

I'm going to wait a bit though, just to see if the clear plastic containers I have on the way might be good enough. When I stated above that I'd tried to checkout of Harbour Freight but they still wouldn't ship to me I wasn't actually prepared to buy one right then and there, but since their shipping policy information didn't say anything about International shipping it was the only way to see if the drop-down menu of countries at checkout included Canada, but it's for the US only. If you don't object, I might take you up on your offer in the future, after I determine if I like the present set-up or not. Thanks again my friend, guys like you are what make this forum what it is!

That's exactly how my mind's-eye pictured it Willie, thank you for confirming it for me!

Considering all the knives you show us Gene, it really doesn't surprise me you have that cabinet! Now, if I could only find a way back to the 20's! Your cabinet is totally cool, and I'd bet it will hold as many knives as you want! Thanks for posting it!
