All About Pocket Knives

I bought this Vignos/Novelty Moose (Canton, OH, 1879-1949) about 20 years ago at a Mason Dixon Knife Club show. It was in peach condition with picture handles of and old streetcar and a personal photo of the conductor. I made a display box with a 1911 Novelty salesman's envelope. About 6 years ago I opened the old display box and found the handles totally cracked up and the blades rusted from celluloid sublimation.
Needless to say I was heartbroken. I let it lay and finally this week I decided to just redo the scales in Brazilian rosewood from and old guitar (1965) bridge that was cracked and had to be replaced.
I'm no knife mechanic but I'm very happy with the way it turned out. It's a big knife, 4-1/4". It's now kind of a mutt but I couldn't do picture handles. J.O'.

Thanks Dogg, The rosewood was an experiment to see if I could do it. Figured if I screwed it up I'd send it to a pro for restoration. It turned out to be nice. If I get to feeling guilty for changing it's nature I can always go back to pictures. J.O'.

An altered knife is far, far better than a ruined knife.
My repaired knives often mean more to me than any new knife. They are personalized, and improved by our efforts.
You should be proud of it!

I had an Aerial Cut that I had to alter to preserve. I got a mechanic, I wouldn't try. Looks like you're a burgeoning knife mechanic, good job J.O.

I tried helping a French Ivory I have and turned the handles into what looked like pig skins ( chicharrones).

I've come to really like it although I would much rather it was all original.I think using period matching handle material, as you did is the best solution. Kudos again J.O.

I'm also happy you were able to salvage all the parts. Most times when those Novelty cell knives go, they take most of the metal with it. Liners or springs get cracked, or blades get eaten up.
