All About Pocket Knives

Ok I won an auction at the bay, Case XX , I new the thing’s wrong it, like blades were sharpened by a grinder or something, the bone handles are pocket worn, but actually looked good. So I just received it and as soon as I pulled it out of the box, it looked a little bit odd to me. I kept staring at it , “the wife” asked me what was wrong , I didn’t answer just staring at this knife, the “the wife” yelled hey and I came back to earth and started laughing. “The wife” asked me again what’s wrong and why are you laughing. I showed her the knife and she said it’s shiny. I said yes it is ,,, he sprayed it completely with to me looks like rustoleum spray Clear Coat, yep Clear Coat. I lightly sanded the bottom spring with a 3000 grit paper and it was coming off on to the paper. Now what do yo think on how to remove this, kicker is the bone handles? Or just send it back to him, still nice knife and got a price on it.

Send it back if you can. Not sure you can preserve the bone handles in good enough condition to make it worth the effort to remove it. Unless something simple like mineral oil will remove it. Could be that something like that would work. I am amazed at what mineral oil will do. It takes off adhesive residue, mold, and lots of stuff. You might try that first. That’s my only suggestion. Do you have a picture of this knife you can share?

Light rub down with paint stripper would remove the clear coat. It's pretty good about not ruining wood underneath, so I would guess it would work on bone too. Depends on how much you like the knife. Even if you keep it you might ask for a partial refund to cover the costs of fixing it as it is.

Hey buddy I have put mineral oil on it, I will go back to it check it out. Mineral oil does clean a lot of things I use it around the shop every day. I will post a picture or two, the knives I like to collect are old and used, if it is all intact. Thanks for the info buddy , have a great day.

I will keep that in mind, and I believe it would work. I think I would need some moisturizer on it after, so it doesn’t dry out from the stripper. That is exactly what I am going to do here in a few minutes and tell him that I need a partial refund. Hey buddy, thanks for the info and have a great day.

Don’t know how well these pictures turned out. Took them last night and was worn out. Like I mentioned I really like to collect old worn work knives as long as they are intact. This was one that fit the bill except for spraying it completely with a clear coat glaze

If you blow up the pics you can definitely see the Clear Coat on it. I am still working on it.

I can see that there is something on the surface of everything on that knife. It doesn’t look bad, just not right. I don’t know what would possess someone to coat a Case XX like that? I could see using Cosmoline to preserve from corrosion but not clear coat. Thanks for the pictures.

Are those handles Red Rogers?
