All About Pocket Knives

I’ll be carrying and showing a knife I received from Roland…. Rest In Peace friend.

Gee, I am so sorry to know he passed. He was an asset to the forum for sure!! I don't have any of his knives although we had e-mailed back and forth about other subjects. He will be in my mind all day tomorrow even if I can't carry a knife he once owned.

I have so many it will be hard to decide which one. Each and everyone of them will make me sad to handle and yet connected to him. Maybe the Joel Chamblin that he and I both admired so deeply. I will try to remember to post the one I decide on tomorrow.

My situation is quite similar, but Roland will definitely be on my mind tomorrow. Nice thought for a deserving tribute Jamie.

I am also deeply saddened by Roland's passing. He told me back in June that he had turned down chemotherapy and was " allowing my body to do it's best." These two big Sheffield knifes - Joseph Rodgers & Sons and G.H. Richards were in the last batch of knives he sent me a couple of months ago. He knew that I loved these big, old gnarly monsters and I will be permanently keeping and enjoying these two. RIP Kootenay Joe.

I never bought a knife from Roland, so I am kind of grasping for straws here, but I posted this Henckels bone handled whittler a while back and Roland liked it very much and made favorable comments about it. That's as close as I can get, so I am carrying it today. Rest in piece Roland.

Here are two that came to mind for this thread. The first is a half whittler pen knife made by Joel Chamblin. The bar shield is 14k gold, the handles are some of the finest pearl I’ve ever seen. The blades are made of premium stainless CPM-154. This knife is simply beautiful and too nice for me to carry. So I put up another knife from Roland, it was a bonus knife he threw in on one of my many purchases from him. It was made by Rough Rider and is an excellent EDC. Holds an edge well and resharpens great. Roland had thousands of knives. In fact he told me he had close to 10,000 at one point. He bought a lot of Rough Rider and Steel Warrior knives, which were not expensive so I know he had a lot of lower priced knives in addition to expensive beauties like this Joel Chamblin. In fact I purchased two Joel Chamblin’s from him and both are amazing knives. He always had an eye for quality, whether it was priced high or low.

I have a few from Roland and I sent him a few but the telephone conversations are what I treasure the most. I use this Burt Foster santoku in my kitchen most days and every time I pick it up I am picking up a Roland memory. For a while it will be a lump in my throat as well. Life is short.

Bought several knives from Roland over the years, always a great experience.
