All About Pocket Knives

I just overhauled this Uncle Henry with a new drop point blade and some maple handles. I still have to sharpen it and give it a final buffing. Not really the look I was after but it will do. Just thought I would share.

Very cool work Nev! Are the new scales what I've seen called "spalted maple"? I'd love to see a pic of the finished job when you give it the final touches.

Well I don't know what look you were going for Nev, but you sure hit it outta the park with that mod! You gave life to an ugly old knife that's now something to be proud of! You certainly are developing some fine knifemaking skills my friend, keep it going!

I think the LB5 frame looks better with the 5OT's main blade as you have done.

Those maple handles are gorgeous! That was a great choice!
Also, the drop-point blade really makes it a unique knife. Between that blade swap and those handles, I believe you have a one-of-a-kind knife that anyone would love to own!

Thanks Herb. Yes they are spalted maple. A friend of mine had some left over from a wood project and gave me the scrap pieces.

Thanks Marco I am still learning. One hard thing for me is to make the correct choice in handle material.

Thank you Cody and Reverand. The blade choice was easy thats all I had to use. But handle material is a hard choice for me. I really like bone but I had this maple and thought I would give it a try.I think if the bolsters were brass it would have looked better. But i really don't have a eye for picking out handles. A lot of times I look to see what others use for an idea.

Thank you all for your comments. I see the imperfections in the knife now that I have finished. I keep trying to improve on every knife I do. I used have3 coats of polyurethane on handles. black magic polishing compound on the bolsters. Now I have black around the pins from the compound I think I am going to try a pin spinner. My pins are 50/50 sometimes they look good others not to good. O well live and learn. Any advice on a pin spinner would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry Nev, I don't know what a "pin spinner" is? Perhaps the black compound under the pins would dissipate with an electric buffing wheel? Hopefully one of our mechanics will have some answers for you, the knife looks great!

For that material, I don't think i would use a pin spinner. I'd just peen them and sand them down flush to the wood.

Your are correct Mike!! You learn from your mistakes. It is very discouraging when you work hard on something and it does not turn out But so is life. I will take a break for a couple days and try again on another knife. At least I have a new knife to carry.

I don't know much about it, but they look great. And I really liked their covers too. Your choice is very good. If you are getting any mistakes in these. So you can make them better.

I took your advice on this stockman I just rehandled and replaced the main blade. I sanded the pins down flush with the micarta handles Looks much better.Thank you for the tip.
