All About Pocket Knives

I picked this up today at a garage sale. I think the mark on the pile side of both blades is interesting. Can’t find it listed. Does anyone have input to help ? Thanks bocaj

There's a Walter Bros. from Germany early 1900's and a John Walter & Co. in Sheffield 1846-1862 (Levine's Guide, 3rd Edit., p.72. If it's either I'd lean toward the Sheffield, That would put it pre-tariff, (1891) with no stamp for country of origin. Not sure, just my guess. . Nice old knife. J/O'

Thinking again about the knife. It looks like celluloid which would mean it can't be made before the late 1860's-to early 1870's, which negates John Walter Co.(Gone c. 1862). If it's ivory (?) then it could be that old. Sorry, I spoke too soon. J/O'.

Thanks. That stamp on the backside just made me think it would have been a bit more English but that handles are French ivory. Thanks

J/O I think the Sheffield firm was Walters, not Walter. I'd lean toward German manufacture, especially with the line under the small o in Co.. That was often indicative of German manufactured cutlery.

Very interesting in 2011 or 10 I posed this knife asking the same questions and info from the guys on AAPK came up with these answers on the paper behind the knife
This is one well made knife

The Sheffield company that existed from 1846-1862 was J. Walters and Co., I believe that's a completely different company. The OP's knife is just Walter without the "S" and most likely your knife is too? I can't make out the tang stamp. From what I've been able to find out the Walter knives were German, Walters were English.

No years on the Walter and Co., There was a Walter Bros. from 1904 to 1914 but not sure if it was related. Someone on here had a big volume of German makers and their histories but I'll be darned if I can remember who it was.

I agree with Eric on the big C underlined little o, that's what I remembered, although it has gotten foggier.
