All About Pocket Knives

Hey Fine Folks,

Has anyone seen this blade pattern before? The blade is sharp, the hook on the end is not.

I have seen these advertised as a horseman's knife. The blunt end is a hoof pick, while the inside is sharpened for cutting baler twine and the like (and could probably also be used for hoof trimming as well).

I have never seen a hoof pick with a sharp blade inside. I think this blade is a "gut hook" blade for slitting the bellies of large game without cutting into the intestines.

Usually a 'gut-hook' blade has a sharp and pointy tip for puncturing through the abdominal wall so that the sharp edge of the gut-hook can then be inserted and pulled on to slice through the abdominal wall.
This OP blade does not look like it has a sharp point.

I've always heard them called horseman's knives for just the reasons Cody stated!

Always referred to as a horse farriers knife. Have had many. That's the way I've always advertised them with no complaints.

That knife was distributed by Frost Cutlery in the years around 2005. Maybe still is? The Bear Hunter knives were a cheap Pakistan made line, one of them was a Buck 110/Schrade LB7 knockoff. Your particular model was sold as the "Hoof and Hay" knife, think it went for around $15 if I recall correctly.

I used that knife when I worked in my uncles shoe repair shop. He called it a Skive knife and we trimmed leather off the perimeter of the Shoesole or shaved off a leather piece at an angle to fit on a half sole repair.
