Memorial Day Weekend

Salutes and honors to all the fallen heroes.
My own were: (Vietnam)
Tommy Ball, Paul Burrier, Dennis Dale, Emmett George, Curtis Harman, Larry Lorber, Michael Orash

I was not in a combat unit. The only one we lost was Cpl. Kopka (Cpl Cool of the motor pool) because he and another Marine were dickin' around with a 45.

Lost a good friend from the neighborhood in a similar situation ...
Randy was National Guard, MP, overseas during the first Gulf war in '91.
He and a fellow MP were sitting cleaning their rifles. The other guy had not cleared his weapon.
Randy took a round to the head. Days shy of 21

Maybe it's even sadder to die of a mishap. At least a combat death carries some honor but an accident, screw up, mistake or, "friendly fire" leaves an awful memory. If you go to the "Virtual Wall" site you can see the "profile" of a service death. I was looking through my friends and didn't realize that Denny Dale was lost to "friendly fire". Even though he's still a fallen hero it seems more tragic. J.O'.

Remembering 2 grandfathers, Mexico and WW I, Father from Korea era but not deployed overseas, a brother Vietnam era served aboard the USS Constellation.

A friend of mine from junior high and high school, Raul Moncada, was at one point honored for being the youngest Marine on active duty. He later went into the Army, and sometime during my enlistment, was killed in Iraq. RIP Raul and all who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Thank you veterans, and especially those not here to read this. The pastor at our church is retired career army and a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan. This was printed in our Order of Service bulletin today. The congregation stood and read it aloud in unison.
On this Sunday before Memorial Day we remember, and we pray for our service members who laid down their lives for their friends and fellow citizens.
We remember and we pray for those who put the health and well-being of others before their own.
We remember and we pray for those who did not lay down their lives, but who suffer physically, emotionally, or mentally, and need healing.
We remember and we pray for those families who are grieving.
We remember and we pray for those service members and military family members who need our ongoing support and care.
We remember and we pray for our leaders to honor our service members, and all of us, by leading with wisdom and restraint.
We remember and we pray for the example of Jesus Christ to be the vision of service for all, whoever we are and wherever we are.
We long for and we pray for a world filled with peace, where we no longer need to lay down our lives for our friends and fellow man.

WALKING FREE
Think of all those fallen soldiers when their hour at last was spent.
How they died in grim rebuke in the land where they were sent.
Their families cling to dreams and reach for shadows passing,
Hoping once again to hear their sons and daughters laughing.
No, sadness reigns now in the breast of those who lost so much.
There will be no light refrain, no embrace, no loving touch.
They're remembered in the fields of bright and shining crosses,
And here at home with aching hearts as we count our losses.
The days are gone when they walked free to choose their path and way,
But not for you and me on this Memorial day.

When I was a kid in Southern Illinois we called it "Decoration Day" because that's when most everyone took flowers to the graveyard to put on the graves of loved ones. I don't know how many still do that.

To all that served to bring freedom to my life I thank you with all that I have and believe and practice every day that freedom isn’t free. I am beyond grateful for the sacrifices made of every magnitude. I’m proud to be an American.

Memorial Day honors the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives for the cause of our freedom, our democracy and defended the lives of those around the world that have had freedom taken from them. It is a day to reflect on their sacrifice and to honor their memory with gratitude.
Let us remember and honor those we lost in battle, while we live on in freedom because of their sacrifices.

Someone once said, "For those who have fought for it, freedom has a flavor the protected will never know."
That doesn't mean that those who have not fought cannot appreciate the sacrifice of others. It means that those who fought have a different understanding of the price that was paid because they were often witness to the transaction.

Dale, you have a way with words that really hits home . Thanks for sharing .
Here’s a few pics of today’s unveiling of the Army Special Operator . It was sculpted in Bronze by an artist from Colorado. It’s our 4 th statue in a series of 14 covering all theaters and conflicts. Made possible by local donations. Also a pic of one of the local cemeteries that we visited. So many flags so many Veterans . Sure felt humbled today. So many gave All !

That was a tradition too, in Spokane, when I was a kid. Decoration Day. I hated it.
From six years on for several years we would go and find my dads grave. I never went back.
