Ontario 1941 military contract butcher.
15 inches overall with 10 inch clipped bullnose blade, 1 5/16 inches “tall” at narrowest and 1 3/4 inches tall at the rise before the clip. Long cut swedge on the “left” side. U.S./ONTARIO KNIFE CO/1941 deep-stamped into “left” side of blade. Not an etch. Blade has been sharpened, but no discernible blade loss. An area of pitting toward the tip on the “right” side. Otherwise surface is mainly clear, with original finish. Made of thicker and stiffer stock than usual for a butcher knife, 1/8 inches. Full tang blade joins slab hardwood handles with a cast (?) pewter (?) bolster. Medium brown (oiled?) handles are in excellent condition, tight to tang, with no swelling or warping. There are some tiny scratches and dents. Pinned to tang with 3 large copper or brass cutler’s rivets. Speculation is that this was a military contract, as the specifications are consistent with a more robust knife than normally seen in butcher shops, and the bolster is equally uncommon, and very desirable to a collector of butcher knives. $100 shipped to a U.S. address. Paypal Friends and Family, check from known member, or USPS money order.
