I have found the open-top friction-fit leather sheaths, for fixed or folder, have rarely resulted in me getting a knife lost, and are much more secure than clips. A few months back, I hooked a virtually brand-new Leatherman tool's clip (the new Bond model) with a trash bag at the county dump, and accidentally threw it away. I asked the clerk at the office, and, well, obviously I was prohibited from retrieving it, and if someone got it, they would call back. That was in January. I bet you five bucks a dump employee pocketed it. And if I find an employee with a Bond, and it's got the 1021 date codes, it's my tool; and for danged sure, I'm making them give it back; because it was the dump's own policies that kept me from retrieving it. If the county still ran the dump, I'm sure I would likely have been able to retrieve it. They sold it to a waste management firm out of Tennessee a couple of years back.

From then on out, my multitools were either dumped in my pocket or carried on a belt sheath. If they had a clip, I'd hook it on the belt sheath so that it helped to secure the tool under the flap.
