All About Pocket Knives

I picked this up for $3 and I think it’s really cool, but trying to search for info either leads me to unrelated brands or pics of knives on tree stumps. The knife has a single mark “STUMP”. 3” long, carbon steel tools, very well built. The inlay is translucent with a white cross on red background with a brass surround in fiber scales. Anyone ever see one before or know anything about this brand?

Their birdseye rivets when they have the washer around the pin, usually a different metal.

Thank you much fellas! I'd heard and read the term before but wasn't sure if those rivets were the one's!

I think your knife is cool as well. Looks to be well made. Have you looked closely on the front and back of all the blades tangs for any other markings?

Yes I have. The only mark anywhere is the word STUMP I’m all caps.

I think this is an old Swiss Army knife made by the company now known as "Victorinox". Likely pre WW II, maybe circa WW I ?
But i am guessing based on a few other knives i saw years ago. So i hope an 'expert' shows up to positively ID this knife.

If this were true I would be ecstatic but alas it is not. I have an extensive Victorinox collection and have seen enough from different eras and even stampings to know this is a clone. It’s a really good one though. It actually reminds me of some early Wenger knives. If I had to guess it is probably German but for whatever reason they decided not to stamp it with any additional info. I have searched a number of forums and found nothing on it.

Here are pictures of catalogue images of the knife i was thinking of, the "Swiss Officer's Knife" patented in 1897. The screwdriver on yours is also a caplifter which is different from the 1897 patent. I think the screwdriver/caplifter design was introduced in 1942.
However you can see that your knife does resemble the original "Swiss Officer's Knife".
Maybe you have an original Swiss Officer's Knife that you could post a picture of for us to see ?

It was certainly designed to capitalize on the popularity of Swiss Army Knives. Many companies made clones. I wish I had an original Officer’s Knife, but the earliest I have is one from the 1930s. Those 1897 originals are extremely rare and valuable. They are actually releasing a replica on June 10 to celebrate 125 years of the Officer’s and Sporting Knife. 1930s 205k with Buffalo Horn Scales 1951-53 234kU with “US PAT PEND” can opener Late 50s Wenger “Wengerinox”

I know that collecting SAK's is a very deep and complex 'rabbit hole' and most of us knife collectors cannot tell an early real SAK from a German copy of an SAK pattern.
It is a benefit to AAPK to have you here to help us out.

Kinda digging up an old thread, but I actually have some info on the Elusive Stump. I found an identical knife under a different name in Dave Arnold’s book A Collector’s Guide to Wenger Knives. In the book it is stamped SENTA which is a maker out of Solingen, Germany. Unfortunately that’s all I have but that’s more than I had.
