Afternoon all . Could use a little help with this piece . Have searched here and got dates 1881 to 1901 . There’s a article in knife magazine I think in 2019 . But can’t find my password to get in to my account
Typed a search here must not be typing in enough letters it says .
Great old lock back ,smooth locking / releasing. No wobble in the blade even after 120 years or so ! When I saw it at the vendors table it was like a magnet pulling me in. Was a great find . would like to get a link or more info though .

That was Dame, Stoddard, and Kendall, an old sporting goods chain out of Boston. I think they had three stores at one time and last I heard they were still in business under the single name Stoddards. Nice knife!!

PS, I just checked and apparently they're completely out of business now. Over time it had morphed into strictly a knife shop/sharpening service but I guess they couldn't make it.

They were founded as Dame, Stoddard, and Kendall in the early 1800's. They were primarily a cutlery store, but also had some fishing gear and early on they had some other sporting goods.
Their private label knives are pretty rare, and every one that I have seen looked to be late 1800's to very early 1900's vintage.
They grew from one store to two then (briefly) to three.
They closed all of their stores IIRC in the early 2000's and moved a small operation to part of a drug store in a Boston suburb. That closed quite awhile ago.
They at one time had an online store called the Pampered Moose, not sure if that is still around.

I have a Stoddards Boston stamped scout knife that was made by Schrade someplace.Late Schrade Cut, early Walden era.

This may be the old sign for Stoddard’s knife and fly shop, overwritten to reflect its erstwhile repurposing to signify the presence of a “gastro-pub”.
I say this because I looked into buying the impressive sign that hung outside the venerable cutlery store right after it closed for business over a decade ago. I was interested in it as a (big) piece of not so ephemeral knife “ephemera”. But a restaurant entrepreneur apparently liked it enough to acquire it for his new Downtown Boston food and beverage establishment -- its name derived from an existing hanging sign.
“He who hesitates is lost”. But what would I have done with that very heavy and large sign…lugged it into knife shows?
Where the sign is today I have not a clue, because Stoddard’s Fine Food & Ale is now defunct, another small business COVID casualty.

Picked this up at the Gator show yesterday, thanks Roger. This knife is featured on page 79 of Goins.
Goins says date range 1880-1901.

Thanks doglegg and Joe. It is definitely a good looking knife for it’s age,one of my favorites for sure
It’s 4 1/2” so it’s a nice size too.

Excellent Bill. Would have loved to be at the show and done some bass fishing around the area. I did that one year and have great memories.
