-Looks to be Stag but maybe bone.
-The tang Stamp, as far as I can tell is (I?KYO)
-back spring is tapered 16/64ths inch down to 12/64ths
- Blade is 3 1/2 inches
- over all 8 1/2 inches
- AND this thing is an inch THICK
Any ideas ?? OW threw my RAZ in there to show the size of this knife.

Well I hope someone here has one that is in better shape. So to at least find out what it is. Your right that it could be polished stag, It's so thick and not even on bothsides so if it is bone they were going for the look of Stag.

MAYBE THE CARCK CAN HELP...it's a sharp crack and somewhat fiborous

does it look re-handled? are there corresponding marks where liner and handle meet?

the handles look good and match the over all look of the knife. rivets are flush on interior of knife also, handles and liner are matched very well as far as i can tell. The dealer had a tag saying its from the 1800's. I am a Non destructive inspector maybe I can do some test on it and find the tang # on it.

looks like a good fit, what i meant was are there any dents in the liners and matching marks on the handles.

could the I?kyo be TOKYO? I cant really see it in the pic's, and thats the word that just jumped out at me.

TOKYO ya I was thinking the samething .... but it dosent look japanese ??? AND yes 2 chips equal 2 dented liners also, looks like they used it as a hammer or something. I wish u all could see this thing it's massive and seems very well built just old and in bad shape. I'm going to perform a (Dye penetrant Inspection) on it to reveal the tang stamp but that will have to wait till Monday.

Well I like it alot so far, once you hold it you just want to know more about it. I picked it up in Northern Maryland also. Not really a port for Japanese knives to end up. But you are right that TOKYO is what it looks like after I Inspect it Monday I hope it shows up.

i'm more of a "case classics" guy(which was actually a program to replicate old case patterns that were not made anymore for the most part. Most of the knives in the program were made by Queen, and a few by Case.Case allowed the use of their name for the program, which was run by Jim parker),and Im also more of a folder guy. There are many here that could give you a better opinion on this, than me.

, and i wouldnt ever want to give someone the wrong info.

I know very little, but....
With the pictures shown, not with "knife-in-hand", it's either bone, or well-worn stag. I wouldn't be overly quick to pronounce it Japanese, tho'. Those iron/steel bolsters, with the rat-tail groove are nothing I've ever seen on a Jap knife. Likewise, the liners...
Very likely that we'll never know the history of this good looking old piece, but with the partial tang stamp, my guess would be an old (I)mperial (K)nife (C) (O). They did make some good p.knives, at one time, and the pattern fits in with the time frame.
It's just a guess, but I'd say (without putting money on it), that it pre-dates Schrade, before they bought the name. LT can probably tell us which cutler made the durn thing, with his knowledge.
I'll hush now,
JR

Hey Lenny, have you tried taking a pencil and leading it at the tang? I have done that on a lot of old guns that I've worked on to get the model numbers and even the maker's name before. Just take a regular pencil and scratch it over the stamp you want to see. It makes stamped letters that are hard to make out easier to see. Then just wipe the lead of the tang with a oil cloth when your done. My old eyes aren't what they used to be so I almost have to do this with a brand new gun now.
