All About Pocket Knives

Anybody collect carving knives? My sons wife works at "Flex Cut carving knives(Flexcut Tool Company). A high end producer. They have some intereting models. They are having the best 2 years of their existance, payig REALLY nice year end bonuses.. Amazon purchased $250,000 worth in one order. I am considering grabbing a few.

I have been pleased with them.

I have several Flexcut but I rarely use them. They seem more like a spring steel and the edges while sharp at first are hard to maintain for me, it’s like they are beveled. I use Occt today last made by Mike Shipley, knives and gouges and like them a lot. O1 tool steel, 59 Rockwell and thinner than flexcut. I also have a home built “Oar carver” that’s have the queen D2 chip carving blade. I like whittler patterns and have several as well as 2 GEC pocket carvers.

I don't like the handles on Flexcuts at all, the blades are just OK. I had 2 of their knives, gave them away. They are starter knives in my opinion.

A Flexcut carving knife was my first carving knife. I like the handle but I find the edge doesn't stay very long. Great beginner knife because they are reasonably priced until you decide if you want to keep carving. I use a Case seahorse whittler pocket knife with a reprofile blade and a GEC pocket Carver a lot. And just added a Uncle Henry Congress to my carver knives. I honestly use the pocket knives more than any.

Can you post some pics of your blade profile changes? I have a seahorse but haven’t had much luck , need bade angle changed I feel like.

About the only thing I've really done is thin the blade down by the edge. I kept the original shape but the edge is really thick compared to my GEC pocket Carver.

That’s what I figured. The angle is too high for me to make precise cuts. I have a Seahorse with the Seahorse scales(laser led bone I assume) but can’t make myself grind on it. I may try to find a cheap delrin one. The small blades on my pocket carver I really like for doing eyes.

This is a rough rider carbon whittler that comes with 2 pen blades, so I modified one into a coping and brought the angle down a little. At $20 I didn’t mind doing this. I have been using it some for a while but like most pocket knives my hand gets tired after a while.
