The date made is on the box label. The year can also be determined from the date code on the tang stamp. Compare the stamp with the chart found in “Research” which is located in the header at the top of this page. Scroll down and click on Case Pocket Knife Age Identification to see the chart. ::tu::

Thank you. Any idea about value on something like this is or what the 084 on the bolster may mean?

The knife was likely a “limited run”. The number is a serial number, as in number 084 of xxx. Xxx could have been 100, 200, 500, or …….. Some one here may know or you could contact Case (888-442-1932) and ask if they know. IMO it doesn’t make much difference how many were made, but some people like to think they have a rare knife because only xxx were made.

As for value it’s probably worth about what the selling price was when new, plus inflation. Check ebay sold listings of mammoth or mastodon handled trappers. (Doubt you’ll find any ebay listings having the word “ivory”.)

Some mammoth ivory knives made by Case have sold here in the AAPK stores. I don’t see one like yours, but you can look and get a ballpark guestimate.

Not totally sure, but I think that Mammoth Ivory blade etch may have been a Shepherd Hills exclusive, so maybe you can get the total number produced from them.

This auction just finished. Sat at $151 for 4 hours, then in the last 2 seconds the bots came into play. Sold for $244.50, and the winning bidder only had one bid, no doubt he had higher bids, but the winning bid trumped everyone else. This may help give you some idea of value, but maybe not.
