All About Pocket Knives

JP sent me a 72 several months ago to get some new handles. About that time after several years of retirement I also went back to work and began moving into a house with my granddaughter. The house was previously occupied by my brother so I wound up helping him move as well. Needless to say I’ve been busy. I want to thank JP for his patience as this should be done already.

So I talked it over with JP and we decided to go with ebony wood with ivory inlay. The mark side came out good but the pile side kept splitting on me. I’m finally getting a chance to rest up so it’s time to finish this so that JP can finally get his knife.

So fourth time should do it. I have bonded the handle in place. I’m going to give it a few days to cure and then I’ll drill the pin holes and shape the handle. After the handle pins are done I can reassemble it.

Here are some pictures of the knife in it’s current state. With a little luck I should have it done soon. Thanks again JP for waiting patiently. I’ll post the finished knife as soon as it’s done.

Ebony wood was the one material that I had repeated trouble with. For me, it splintered easily. I managed to get it pinned onto the liners but ended up with an unacceptable amount of chip out when trying to inlay the shield. I’m sure many folks have used it without issue but for me it’s on my list of materials that I won’t use.
Your project is looking good! I particularly like the inlay.

Thanks guys for the props. I’ve been working a lot lately and don’t have much free time. I found some time this morning to try mounting the pile side cover. After breaking so many covers on this one I got it on without splitting it. I know I said the next picture would be the finished knife but I have to share a picture of both sides. I have more finish work to do before reassembling. But here is where I’m at. I’ll update this thread when I’m done.

Now am getting excited. Glad to see that you got that pile side conquered. Your the Man . The wait is well worth it . Am looking forward to carry it ,but more importantly that’ll remind me of the folks here on this forum . Believe I bought it here and now a member is dressing it up . So will slid it in my Pocket someday and have memories forever .

Well the knife is finished and in JP’s hands! Or pocket . It turned out good I like the look of ebony even though it’s difficult to work with and the ivory insert looks great with the ebony. The clip blade is slow and has to be pushed closed. It’s not a deal breaker for an edc but I wished it had the same snap as the other blades. JP is happy with it and that’s what matters!

Well done, #goldpan. Skilled knife mechanics are generally underappreciated, IMO (although not so much here on AAPK, of course) and deserve a lot of respect for making extremely difficult mods, rebuilds, etc., look factory (or better, as is usually the case).

I knew certain materials like MOP/Abalone & ivory are difficult (and potentially even dangerous) to work with, but I had no idea Ebony wood was as well.

The finished result of JP's 72 is indeed quite stunning; I especially like the ivory insert which adds a touch of class and really dresses up the ebony perfectly and gives it a black tie/tuxedo appearance.

Unfortunately, now whenever JP pulls that knife out of his pocket everyone within viewing distance will expect him to produce a magnum of appropriately aged Dom Perignon to accompany it in proper style!

Congratulations, JP, I think you will agree that it was worth the wait.

As to the Champagne, that would have to be Miller’s , the Champagne of Beers . As my budget for Dom Perignon isn’t quiet there yet.
