All About Pocket Knives

In December of 1907 John Schatt applied for a patent for his leather punch and it was granted in June of the next year.

This is a laminated (two piece) punch similar to the punch patented by New York Knife Co. These are pretty scarce because most were used up, as they were meant to be. I have only seen a few of these survivors and just recently was able to obtain another one.
Here are two pretty much mint Jacks that I acquired from David Clark. They are the two that are seen in the article shown above.

This Ebony covered Jack recently showed up on the inter-tubes and I was lucky enough to acquire it.
But she has had a pretty tough life, as most of them I'm sure have. The blade is about half gone and both blade and punch are tipped but these don't surface to often so I though I'd give her a shot. She had been squashed in the center pretty badly, bending all 3 brass liners and cracking the mark cover very badly. I filled up both beds with shim stock where the damage was most pronounced, filling them out to there original size. Then clamping the bottom together where it was badly gaped, in an effort to straighten out the liners. I left it that way for two weeks. Then I filled the huge crack in the ebony with super glue and re-clamped it for another week. It's not going back into service but it is another scarce example of this pattern.

In fact I highly recommend that site for anyone interested in S&M and Queen cutlery as they are so intertwined.

Happened across another John Schatt punch recently. This one in pretty good shape except for the large piece of bone missing on the pile side.
I'd pay as much for the missing bone piece as I paid for the whole Jack! Actually pretty nice jigged bone. Really like the Patent date stamp on the reverse of the punch tang.
