All About Pocket Knives

This was a knife I got in vacation this summer, aside from a lot of staining of the blade and some pitting and scratching it had a nearly full blade but celluloid handles. Someone had made a nice custom sheath for the knife so I thought the customer sheath went far better with stag than with celluloid.

The pictures below show the final result.

Were the original handles pearl or goldstone? That looks small. If the blade is less than 4", it is one of the 63 pattern models.

That is a 63 pattern then. The advertised OAL was 7-1/2", with a 3-7/8" advertised blade length.

The celluloid handles came in 5 varieties in 1931, The most common was the 263 with "composition pearl with black underlayment" OR the 263 "with assorted composition colored handles". The 3rd was the 63GS with "goldstone colored composition handles. The last 2 were the G263 and 63GSG - which were the 263 and 63GS with guards.

The plain jane Model 63 had bone stag handle and came with a flat grind, a saber grind or as a "scaler" - flat grind with fish scaler notched on the spine.

In 1936, the saber grind and scaler versions were discontinued. The 2 goldstone handled models disappear in the 1936 catalog, and the scaler blade shifted to the 233, 238 and BX38 patterns. The stag handled 63 and the pearl w/ black underlayment G263 were the only 2.

In 1941, the stag handled 63 and the 263 pearl/black underlayment remained, being rejoined by the 63GS goldstone.

The workhorse 63 pattern was a victim of WW2, never returning to production after the war.
