Imprint on Schrade Melon Tester

I bought this Schrade Melon Tester off eBay recently. Has anyone
tried to sand or buff off the inscription on a composite knife?
How do you go about it? I bought the knife with the idea
of taking off the name without ruining the knife.
The imprint is fairly deep into the shield. I know
the material is scuff resistant and will probably burn or
catch on fire if it got too hot.
Also what year do you think it was made?

The imprint was done with the same process as there scrimshaws. A die was made and then applied under heat in a special machine which ran at over 400 degrees and was not made to be taken off easily . The die is above the correct color tape ( for want of a better word ) which was impressed upon the delrin handle or scale. To answer your question of removal all I know of is to sand it off. This will leave the handle highly scuffed and to some degree mishapen . This process is why you find Schrade seconds with printing to light or dark and sometime burnt. It is not a good idea to remove unless you are opting to completely change the handles. These can be found with out any imprinting these were either seconds or extra stock of that pattern. Perhapes someone else may have a further suggestion. Good Luck LT

It looks like your knife is Delrin plastic, not the earlier celluloid. It will not degrade under heat. But if it was mine I would just leave it alone. Looks good.

Agree with TR. Most melon testers are advertising give-aways and I would think collectors look for that. At least I do. IMHO removing the imprint would affect it's value negatively. J.O'.

The original owner's phone # is on the knife; why don't you call him and ask him?

That is a mid-California telephone Area Code. (Okay, I was curious).

Marco,
Who MADE you? (This sounds as if it has the making of a "dime-store/drug-store/paperback" novel).
