All About Pocket Knives

I have an old Case Scout knife. Based on the tang stamp it is 1920 -1940 and has a very unusual shield. It would be oval except it is pointed on each end. Case is on top of Scout. The "C" in Case is the top half of the "S" in scout. The tail on the "C" curls up over the word Scout and ends with a barb on the end. There is no model number stamp on any of the four blades. Scales are brown jigged bone. The blades are spear point, can opener, bottle opener/screw driver and awl. I can't find out anything regarding this knife other than what I stated. I was told recently that Case did not make a Scout kinfe this early. Does any one know this knife?

it sounds like 6445r. does it have a bale? i found that knife with that shield pictured in the tested section of ferguson's guide, third edition. i'm sure it's referenced elsewhere

It did have a bale that is now missing, and yes it is a Case Tested XX. I was just attempting to attach some photos but am having a little trouble. Any idea of the rarity or value in good used condition?

i think the latest book on a mint is about a grand. less in the real world and lower in less than mint. have you searched old ebay sales? pretty good way to get an idea. it has good potential i would say. maybe perry miller or bladerunner will comment on it's value.

Yes, I have looked in ebay and found nothing like it. While I do collect Case knives this one actually belongs to a friend. It was found in an old tool box that was tossed in one of his dumpsters. You would be amazed what people throw away. Thnaks for your help.

I appreciate your comments, but those are not the same knife exactly. The shield is completely different on this knife and it is a slightly different design. This one has a fingernail grove on the bottle opener and not a thumb bead. I saw the Case Tested XX knife on ebay but as I said the shield and other items are different. Thanks again for your comments.

The shields look the same to me....the bottle openers look a little different.

There are a LOT of variations of Case Tested scout/utility knives. At least three different can openers, regular shield, SCOUT shield, no shield, two different screwdriver blades, grooved bolsters or plain, pinned bail or bail simply inserted into holes in the bolsters, green bone or rough black, or red fiberloid, red filberloid with no bolsters and "birdseye" rivets....and some more that I am not thinking of. There are also two different variations of rough black handles.

I think I have at least four different ones, and I don't even focus on the scout patterns.

the 6445r pic in ferguson's is a match to your description. can you post a pic?

duh! sorry - brainfart! that's the knife i have a pic of. is the other scale chipped or just the mark side?

If the handles were sound, and it had a bail maybe 400 bucks(retail) give or take.(I can't see the blade that well or the back handle so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt). Like it is with damaged handle(s) and a missing bail it would be hard to get much out of it....if you could find a buyer willing to restore it, you'd be lucky to get 200 dollars IMO. If it were mine, I'd try to find an original bail, and leave it as is. Fine old piece,thanks for showing.
