Does anyone know what kind of a knife this is or what it was supposed to be used for?

Your knife is a German "jagdmesser" which translates to "hunting knife". If you google jagdmesser you will see lots of them. Yours is a small game hunting knife, made for dressing out small game.

Those can get fairly decorative sometimes and I suppose look pretty good tucked into one's lederhosen? Rostfrei just means rust-free or stainless. The OP probably knew that.
