All About Pocket Knives

Well its me again, the new guy. I've been looking at alot of knives, I really like the mammoth handles, have tried to buy a few but not sure of their value. can anyone give me an idea of what the value of a mammoth handle knife would be. I realize the value is what someone will give, and knife pattern. But an average maybe.

This is probably only going to frustrate you more but its not an easy question to answer. First of all pricing, it seems is what the market will bear as you probably know and understand. Second, The only way you can feel good about giving the money for a mammoth handled knife is to sample the market. There are several websites that have knives for sale, and of course there are several knives posted as buy it nows and of course the auctions at some websites have mammoth knives. My point is study some that have sold already, of your pattern, of your favorite brand, whatever fits your theme and take an average. I'm sure this doesn't really give you much information that you don't allready have but one thing I've noticed for sure on mammoth handled knives, especially case, they are high....very high! Of course this is all my opinion and there are many others at this website that are much more knowledgeable about "buying" than I. But for what its worth, here it is.

I have looked on a couple of auction sites, haven't see but one mammoth peanut for sale and it went for 355.00. Guess I will just have to keep looking and hope to find a bargin. Probably dreaming, but whats wrong with a good dream. haha.

----- When it comes to Mammoth Ivory handles there are two different types most knife makers & custom knife makers offer them in, the 1st is Mastodon Bark Ivory which has a lot of texture, color & natural character lines to it similar in many ways to genuine Stag that is smooth, the 2nd is also Mastodon but in this case its the inner Cream Ivory that is beneath the Bark which has been shaved away & the color stands out as a light cream yellow with a 3D effect to it. Both these types of Mammoth Ivory are very sote after & very expensive on most popular name brand cutlery names so its safe to say that if your choose to buy a Case knife with this handle it will go high on the buying price, if you want to save some money on your buy I would look at Bulldog knives for this handle! ... One more thing I wanted to tell you, if you log into this site under your user name you will notice that under my user name a photo of a 1994 - Case Classic Elephant Toe pattern that's a "prototype" with 25,000 year old Mastodon handles, this knife cost me $525.00 three years ago & would have cost me around $700.00 to a $1,000.00 if I didn't have the connections I have! ... What I do on knives I desire is try and find a couple, and watch them on E-Bay, I keep a log book as well, which I annotate and track prices. Gives me a feel what I can be comfortable spending.
Example: NKCA Knive 1977 Kissing Crane Canoe, Books for about $125
I have seen it sell for $50.00 and $29.99 (which I got it for 29.99... couldnt resist when I saw how close to close it was and how low the price was.
It does take patience, but I look for specific knives, research and then try to buy!
If you like I can try and keep an eye out for Mammoth!

If you do a search for "Weidmannsheil" on e-bay you'll probably see a few mammoth ivory handled folders that will sell for around $100. It's second cut, but it's still mammoth ivory.

Weidmannsheils are made by the Olbertz factory in Solingen Germany and are good quality. I have several myself. I don't have any in mammoth however.

Hey thanks for all the good information. I just purchased a tiny trapper with the Mammoth Ivory handles for 177.00. I really like the knife. After watching several on the auctions I felt this was a good purchase. Anyway thanks for all the great information. as I have said I just started serious collecting. My main interest are the smaller trappers and peanut knives.
espically if they are unique in some way. Its fun looking and exciting when you find something. Again Thanks alot, I really use this site for good information. Charlie
