All About Pocket Knives

Just finished this sheath up today. Veg tan outer with a black deerskin liner. Knife by me also. Been quiet so Thought I'd post this one up

sheath looks great and I really like that stamping pattern

It does look great, and the Y stamp gives a distinctive pattern unlike what you usually see or the stamps I have.

Gee whiz I sure like that sheath! So do you glue the deerskin to the leather and then form the sheath from that one combined piece? Does the deerskin liner add anything other than the aesthetics of the color contrast? Is it better somehow to have deerskin in contact with the knife vs. leather? If so, what is the specific advantage?

I’m not much of a fixed blade knife guy but I think I need to dig out a nice example from the handful I have and send it off to you. It would be a real pleasure to carry in one of your beautiful sheaths.

Thank you. Its a newer stamp to me made by a gent in Bulgaria Named Sergey Neskromniy His site is Leather stamp tools. Got a lot of different then the old standards.

Olde I am sure I have a lot of the stamps you reference see above. That guy sure makes some neat new stuff. Nothing wrong with the old ones either mind ya

Hi Dennis,

So I learned how to do this from some tutorial videos I bought. The videos were made by Chris Crawford of Crawford knives. The sheath maker is Paul Long. Who has been making some of the finest sheaths on the planet for a long time. Yes the deer skin is both glued and stitched to the Veg tan leather. So the advantage here in my opinion is the deer skin allows for a nice friction fit of the knife in the sheath. As opposed to having to wet mold the leather to the knife. It also makes for a much nicer aesthetic as well again imo. As far as better guess thats mainly in the eye of the beholder. To me this is one way to make a very high end sheath to complement a high end knife.
