My dads had this knife for a little more than 50 years and he got it from his brother. I was trying to figure out what it is on the bottom it says green island 1944 and was wondering if anyone had any information about it.

Welcome to AAPK. I can't answer your questions but there are some Marbles and fixed blade experts here that will know about it., Be patient until one of them sees this.

Looks like a Pacific Theatre knife. The stacked leather handles on knives in the Pacific Theatre of WWII would basically rot off due to the climate, so the guys got creative and searched for suitable replacement material, basically any scraps they could find. Lots of it was bakelite, plastics, acrylics, insulators, etc. This was often stacked into some beautiful patterns such as your knife. There's a Green Island just west of Midway, but the Green Island on the knife probably refers to the battle of Green Islands, which was a successful battle by the United States and New Zealand to take the islands from Japan (they're part of the western Solomon Islands) in 1944.

Very cool historic knife! Was your dad's brother in the war?

From what I know he was a marine in vietnam. I don't know how long he served or in what division.
