All About Pocket Knives

My son sent me this photo asking what the short triangle-shaped blade is for. Says it is sharpened. I’ve never seen one like it before. Figure someone here will know what it is.

If I remember, when these were new, that tool was marketed by Queen as being a can opener. I've actually passed on these mainly because it seems awkward compared to the "double hook" most Scouts have; or the style Victorinox uses. I think this is based on some old early 1900s pattern Scouts, and that's designed for tin cans, not the modern steel ones.

I also would say can opener.

Thanks. Turns out he bought it from a member here. I advised him the consensus is it’s a can opener. Makes sense given that it’s a scout/utility pattern.

There's a blade very similar to that on my Victorinox, for watch opening. Not saying that's what it's for, just noting the similarity.

It does look a lot like a watch opener tool to me. I've actually preferred opening watch cases with pocket pen knives as they are much slimmer than the tools they sell.

Which is why you see a lot of knives with broken pen blades. A properly made watch opening blade will get under the raised portion of the back and still be stout enough not to break when using it.

Ken, I think in actual use it would function like the Utica pictured below.

It’s a can opener. That’s the S&M premier scout, bought mine directly from Clarence Risner at a show in Pigeon Forge. These were an sfo for him. Very nicely done.

This old Kutmaster definitely has a can opener. I didn't know there was a watch opening blade, but I could probably use one.

Thanks for the replies. I’ll see him next month and will get the knife in-hand to check it out. I’m thinking knife collecting may be hereditary.
