All About Pocket Knives

Anyone have any idea as to the maker of this old hoe? I know on axes a mark like the zero/0 could be related to the hardware stores it was distributed to. However I am not sure about the zero/0 mark on this ho.

That’s a neat one. Around here we call that style an eye hoe or a smith hoe. The ones I have were all blacksmith made as you can see the forge welds on them and there are no markings.

My plan was to use it, as it seems there is no end to the weeds always growing in my yard As I say "Why buy Chi-Com when there are good 'ol American made tools in so many garages and sheds all over the good 'ol USA!!!

My Father always called it a grub hoe.
He said he used it when he was young for chopping weeds for their cotton and tobacco.
I still have it hanging up in the shop.
You've got a nice hoe there!

Nice find. That one was made of heavy gauge steel and will outlast several of the cheapie new ones they sell nowadays. I love finding those old hoes, shovels etc at trade day and farm sales.

I have a hoe I am going to clean up that has gotten a bit rusty. I found it years ago on an abandon farm when I was hiking in the interior of Brazil in the middle of nowhere. I brought it home as a pretty unique souvenir. I will post some pictures to follow....

I do not recall seeing an eye hoe before. Is there a standardized handle for them or do you have to get creative improvising one? Shovel handles taper the wrong way near their scoop end. With that taper cut off would one work?

My root cutter mattock with a bad handle warp to one side was $1.50 at a garage sale. I bought it thinking I'd rehandle it but didn't after learning the handles were over $10. Now they're $35. The couple of afternoons I spent digging with it it worked fine as is. Eventually I found a used pick mattock cheap. I think a pick mattock is the best general purpose tool. The two sides of a pick are not different enough to get excited about and most owners do not keep the axe blade side of a root cutter mattock sharp making it faster to fetch an axe for large roots.

Admittedly I seldom dig. The wiser sasquatch never hoes the weeds along the trail to its cave.

One of my cousins used tree branches to rehandle all his rusty yard work and firewood tools. Some have odd curves, side branch nubs and bark on the portions he does not hold onto but they work fine and he does not have to lock his tool shed.

That is a good idea ... a little sanding here and there should do the trick. ... I remember going into a hardware store one day and seeing the cost of a new axe handle, about $30 at the time... I was shocked. I could a used American made axe at the swap meet for $5 to $15 almost any weekend...
