All About Pocket Knives

When I was 7-8 my aunt gave me redish colored jack knife....I recently found it....

The stamped areas say: schrade Walden, ny. 917

I am not a collector, but have not been able to find much of anything about this knife....I really would like to know why there isn't any info about it on google...any help would be appreciated

The 917 was known as the Sportster. It was the shadow pattern version of the 920 Sportsman's knife with a fancy milled back. The blade configuration was the same on both knives. Go here, you'll find it if you scroll down to page 13. The Sportsman's knife is also in that catalog on page 4.

It was only made for about two years, 1953 and 1954. Sort of morphed into the 906 in 1957 but in actuality that was a completely different knife.

Show a picture of yours if you have one. I seem to recall seeing that one in waterfall celluloid as well (even though I've only seen it offered in "Red Fiber") but I might be thinking of a different knife.

I have a 906 Stainless and what is good about these S-W multiblades is that the red handles do not crack. I used to have a good collection of vintage German multiblades with red 'Fibrox' handles and nearly everyone had a crack or cracks at the bird's eye rivets or near the bail.
The 906 is from 1950's so handles are not Delrin but they are stable, don't crack or shrink. Does anyone know what the handle material is ?

Tdavis I figured that's what it was, I think pretty much all if not all of them were made with that red material. Almost like bakelite.
