Guys,
Does the serial number on my Gerber Boot Knife translate to a date of manufacture? I have looked in my reference books but cannot find anything in the way of an answer to this question.
As always, thanks for any help on this,
Ray

Ray:That is a Gerber Custom Mk1 with the wood handle. They normally came with a cast aluminum handle. I believe if you Google Gerber Mk1 they will have a list of the years they were made by serial #.I know they do for the MkII's.

The Mark I Presentation (wood handle) was produced 1977-1984. The knives were sold with tan sheaths (usually lighter colored than yours). Gerber also produced the Mark II and the Guardian in wood presentation variant. And, they also produced engraved examples.

The first knife pictured appears to have an acid etch, where the second on is a stamped tang. Any significance?

I'm not sure Tom. Best guess is that is has to do with the years in which they were made.

Gerber Slant 2, 1972-1981. I'm no expert but I'm unaware of any serial # related charts.

There is no production date chart for the Mark I. As to the stamped and etched serial numbers; from the examples I've examined it seems to be totally random.
