Re: Beagles and Bunnies
Great knives and great dogs! My first dog was a beagle that wandered into our neighborhood one day and adopted us.Never did find out who she belonged to.Was about a year old at the time. Absolutely fearless except she was scared to death of gunfire.Walked out of our lives one day after about 18 years and never saw her again. Figured she either was going back home or off to die.

Grew up with sounds of baying beagles and hounds running down rabbits in the northeast. Now that land is all empty factories and office buildings.
The dogs and rabbits were better for a boy growing up then gray buildings.
Oh I have a Fur Fish and Game folder with hounds.

Re: Beagles and Bunnies
Good stuff, John.
My first dog as a grown person was a beagle named Spoon. He was a great pet and great friend. I'll never forget that I took him with me on a coon hunt when he was quite young and he loved getting out. The hounds treed a coon and when we jumped the coon out young Spoon was the first to arrive and the coon just sort of gathered him in and proceeded to kick his young butt. Scared him half to death as he had no clue what was going to happen when he ran in there. That was his last coon hunt but I did take him to the Bride's Uncle's farm where there were lots of cotton tails. He was a natural at going after the rabbits and after he jumped up a few and trailed them decently I shot one for him thinking he would enjoy picking one up and giving the rabbit a shake. Fact is, he cared nothing about catching a rabbit or shaking one. He just loved to trail and run one.
Didn't mean to hijack your post but it brought back some great memories.

John, I grew up I Southeast Missouri around all the cotton fields and still live here. I have hunted rabbits all my life. My favorite hunting as your moving around alot on those old cold winter days. My dad always said he prefer a cottontail over a TBone steak. Boy he knew how to fry them up too. I need to take my old Remington 870 and see if I can pop a few! Coyotes and farmers planting right up to the tree lines have made it a little harder on the hunters. Dad said he used to ride with the farmers on their tractors and shoot them by the gunny sacks.

I lost my beagle, Hunter this past October. He ran off in search of his most ancient ancestors. I will join him in his quest someday soon. One thing for sure is that he took a piece of me with him when he left. I miss him everyday. I have posted this before but will share it again here. This was my favorite pic of Hunter that I had put on a Zippo.

Re: Beagles and Bunnies
Beagles are great little hounds and to expand this beyond bunnies, we used to know some fellers that used the Beagles as deer dogs. This was years ago in central Florida when hunting deer with hounds was a lot easier to do. The Beagles were slow enough for the hunters to get ahead of the deer if they got in a thick rough place and wouldn't come out. The big dogs, Walkers, Redbones, and Black and Tans would put a deer on the road and some one on the next ranch lease would catch them. We had some Beagle/Basset/Bulldog cross dogs that would run a deer. An interesting thing usually happened when one of these short legged hounds would jump a deer, the big dogs would seem as bird dogs sometime do, honor the point, and let the slow dog lead the race. Those days are over for me but what great memories of those wild, crazy days hunting deer in the flat piney woods of central Florida before Disney.
